You could say that Vancouver is just another big city. It’s got the big hotels, the designer shops, the smattering of coffee shops on every corner.
But look a bit closer, and you’ll find that Vancouver is a whole lot more. Underneath the polished veneer of glass-fronted high-rises is an adventurous spirit with so much to offer for the wild at heart, especially couples. From ziplining to zombies, here’s just a few awesome Vancouver adventures to try with your other half this weekend.
1. Take a seaplane tour
What with the picturesque harbour, the North Shore Mountains and the sprawling Stanley Park, there’s no denying that Vancouver is a pretty city. Bet you didn’t know that it looks even better from above – from 2000 feet above, to be exact.
Catch a seaplane from the Vancouver Flight Centre next to Canada Place with Harbour Air , and enjoy a 10, 20 or 30 minute tour over the city’s most notable sights. The cosy planes seat about 12 people in rows of two, so you can get cosy while you coast around. Adrenaline junkies will love the landing!
2. Cycle around the Seawall
What could be more romantic than exploring together by bicycle? If you’re feeling energetic, grab a picnic and your significant other and spend the day cycling the seawall – which offers 28km of ever changing scenery, from Kitsilano Beach to Stanley Park.
3. Unleash your inner artist
Less strenuous but no less adventurous is Paint Nite – an event which allows you to embrace your creative side while enjoying some delicious cocktails for courage! Local artists teach you how to reproduce one of their paintings, and you even get to take it home afterwards. You don’t need any previous experience or talent – just turn up and have an open mind. Comparing how different you and your partner interpret the brief is half the fun!
4. Kayak the coast
Vancouver offers ample opportunities to get out on the water in a two-person kayak. Hit the water at Granville Island or Deep Cove, and spend the day soaking in the sights from a different perspective.
Stand Up Paddle (SUP) Boarding has seen a surge in popularity in recent years – and for good reason! It’s an exciting and different way to explore Vancouver’s coastline with your other half, and it’s a lot easier to pick up quickly than surfing (although you’ll still have a great time laughing at each other as you inevitably fall off your boards). Rent equipment from Deep Cove Canoe and Kayak Centre or the Ecomarine Paddlesports Centre.
6. Hit the slopes
With three local mountains to choose from, and Whistler less than two hours away, world class skiing and snowboarding is one of Vancouver’s main draws. You can go from downtown Vancouver to Grouse in less than 45 minutes. Chase each other down the slopes, or take a two hour lesson for just $45 if you’re a newbie. Seymour and Cypress mountains are just minutes away, too.
7. Zip through the trees
If you don’t fancy skiing, try the ziplining at Grouse instead! It’s a great way to explore the mountain without ending up face down in the snow. Get your adrenaline pumping as you whizz over old growth forests and canyons for two hours. This is one instance when you should definitely look down!
8. Strap on your snow shoes
In the winter months, snow shoeing is a great way to get out and explore the terrain in all its snowy glory. Grouse, Seymour and Cypress all provide snow shoeing tours. It’s the perfect way to spend an active weekend as a couple.
9. Hike to your heart’s content
Thanks to its incredible natural surroundings, there’s no shortage of great hikes to do in and around Vancouver. From simple jaunts to the gruelling Grouse Grind, it’s a fantastic way to spend some quality time together, get fit – and get some awesome couple selfies.
10. Escape games
If you two thrive on problem solving and being under pressure, you’ll love these real-life escape scenarios designed to get your heart pumping and your mind ticking. Some include zombies, some mean you need to solve puzzles to escape. Check out Exit Canada for more information.
11. Vancouver mystery tours
Wondering what to do for your next date night? Go for a cocktail before embarking on a Forbidden Vancouver tour . Try the Lost Souls of Gastown, during which you’ll learn all about Vancity’s surprisingly illicit and gruesome past from a professional actor. Like all the best things, it’s educational, good fun and a little bit naughty.
